Craps Casino
Craps is an exciting and spectacular table game that allows for a fair chance of winning. The game is played with two dice. It is popular in casinos and also among army men. Craps is said to date back to the Crusades and evolved in France from where it came to New Orleans. Because craps tables involve the most money out of any standard casino game, they are managed by teams of workers. A standard team consists of 4 casino employees. Many crews also include a fifth member that rotates in for the other dealers.
Prior to Amendment 50, craps was not allowed at Colorado casinos. But on Nov. 4, 2008, Colorado voters passed sweeping changes to the “limited gaming act” that not only raised the maximum betting limits on a given hand from $5 to $100, but allowed for additional games including craps.

You’ll know a craps table when you see it. It is the biggest table in the casino table games section. When the dice are hot, it’s the loudest table in the casino; When the dice are cold, it’s the loneliest. Though the table looks like it would take a masters degree to play, developing a basic understanding of craps is not difficult and can be done in a short amount of time. Here is a brief guide to help you learn how to start that process.
How To Play Craps
Craps Game
Craps is nothing more than a dice game. One player, the shooter, rolls the dice and everyone else bets on the outcome of the roll. No one is in competition with each other and everyone roots for the shooter, which is why a craps table with a hot shooter can be so rowdy. The game starts with each player placing a bet, and you can do so up until the player shoots and the dealers yell “No more bets!” This is called a “come out” roll. After which three things can happen depending on the roll.
Craps Rules
If the shooter rolls a:
- 2, 3 or 12 – Craps (Pass line bets lose – Don’t Pass bets win)
- 7 or 11 – “Natural” (Pass line bets win – Don’t Pass bets lose)
- Any other number – Establishes a point
Craps Casino
On the come out roll, a bettor must place the table minimum bet at either the “pass line,” or the “no pass line.” The dice are rotated around the table after each run, giving anyone who wants a chance to shoot.
When the point is established, the shooter keeps rolling until they either roll the point number again, or a seven. A seven ends the roll and causes nearly any bet on the layout to lose. Craps tends to be superstitious game, so players generally will avoid even saying the word “seven” out loud at the table.
There are approximately 40 types of craps bets that can be made during a roll. This is why there are always four casino dealers watching a craps table. They are the “boxman” (watches the chips), the “stickman” (watches the dice), and two other dealers (keeping track of players’ bets).
The easiest way to get into a game of craps is to wait until the come out roll and place a bet on the pass line. This means you are wagering that the shooter will:
1) Roll a 7 or 11 on the first roll, or;
2) Roll the established point before they roll another 7.
You will also want to “take odds” on the come bet. The odds amount varies from casino to casino and usually is up to 5 to 10 times the amount of your bet. To take odds (which is, mathematically, the best bet a player can make), place the your bet directly behind your pass line chips. Then sit back and get caught up in the excitement.
There are a lot of different ways a craps game can play out depending how the dice fall. You can bet pass or no pass, single numbers, come and don’t come bets and proposition bets.
As you can see craps is a very simple game that seems intimidating at a glance. However, if you are the kind of player that likes to take a chance or feeds off of the energy of other players, then this might be a great place to start. When you are ready, wait for come out roll and go for it. Just make sure you ask the dealer for the right time at which to enter the game.
Rules of the Game
The first roll of the game is known as the “Come Out” roll and you (Pass Line) win if the dice land on a 7 or 11. If the dice land on 2, 3, or 12, know as Craps, the Pass Line loses. A roll of 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 establishes a point for the game, and to win on the Pass Line, the dice must land on an established point before a 7 is rolled. The white “On” puck in front of the Dealer will mark the point during a game and will be “Off” on the first roll of a new game.
Pass Line:
On the come-out roll, 7 or 11 wins. 2, 3, or 12 (craps) loses. Any other number will be the Point. To win, the Point must be repeated before a 7 rolls. If the 7 rolls before the Point is repeated, the Pass Line loses, and the dice are offered to the next shooter. A Pass Line wager is a “contract” bet. It cannot be reduced or removed once the Point is established, until it wins or loses.
Don’t Pass Line:
The Don’t Pass Line is opposite of the Pass Line. On the come-out roll; 7 or 11 loses. 2 or 3 wins, and 12 is a push. Any other number becomes the Point. If a 7 rolls before the Point, the Don’t Pass wins. If the Point is repeated prior to the 7, the Don’t Pass wager loses. Don’t Pass wagers may be reduced or removed once the Point is established, however they may not be placed or increased.
Come Bets:
Come Bets are similar to the Pass Line bets. They may be made on any roll subsequent to the come-out roll. The Come rules are the same as the Pass Line rules. The only difference is that the Dealer moves the wager to a box that corresponds to the number that was rolled. The flat, or original Come bet, works on the come-out roll. Odds are off unless stated otherwise.
Don’t Come Bets:
Don’t Come rules are the same as Don’t Pass rules. The Don’t Come may be bet any roll subsequent to the come-out roll. The Dealer moves the wager to the corresponding box behind the number rolled. Don’t Come bets work on the come-out roll. Odds (Lays) also work on the come-out roll unless otherwise stated. Place Bets: Place Bets are a wager that a specified number (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10) will roll before a 7 rolls. Place Bets have their own set of odds that they are paid at:
Numbers: Odds: Example: Proper Bet Units:
4 & 10 9 to 5 $5.00 wins $9.00 Bets made in units of $5.00
5 & 9 7 to 5 $5.00 wins $7.00 Bets made in units of $5.00
6 & 8 6 to 5 $6.00 wins $7.00 Bets made in units of $6.00
To make a Place Bet, tell the Dealer which number(s) are desired and how much is to be wagered. Set the bet in the Come area, and the Dealer will place it in the appropriate spot. Place Bets stay up until the 7 rolls or the player specifies that they be taken down. Place Bets are off on the come-out roll unless otherwise stated. Place Bets must be made in proper units. Field Bets: Field Bets are ONE roll bets that may be made at any time. 2 & 12 pay double. 3, 4, 9, 10, and 11 pay even money. Any other number loses. The wager is placed and removed by the Player.
Odds:
This wager is made as an addition to the Pass, Don’t Pass, Come, or Don’t Come bets. Pass Line Odds are set directly behind the original Pass Line bet by the Player. Come, Don’t Come, and Don’t Pass odds are set in place by the Dealer at the request of the Player. Set the cheques on the layout and inform the Dealer that they are for Come, Don’t Come, or Don’t Pass odds. Odds are paid according to the true odds of the dice (true odds are the way that number can roll vs. numbers of ways to roll a 7).
Point/Number Pass/Come Odds Don’t Pass/ Don’t Come Odds
4 & 10 2 to 1 (Every $1 bet wins $2) 1 to 2 (Every $2 bet wins $1)
5 & 9 3 to 2 (Every $2 bet wins $3) 2 to 3 (Every $3 bet wins $2)
6 & 8 6 to 5 (Every $5 bet wins $6) 5 to 6(Every $6 bet wins $5)
There are six ways to roll a 7. There are five ways to roll a 6 or 8. There are four ways to roll a 5 or 9. There are three ways to roll a 4 or 10.
